Mathematics

In mathematics this half term we will be studying the following areas: Addition, Subtraction, Division and Multiplication. This will include the study of the following areas:

  • Add and subtract numbers mentally, including:

-  A three-digit number and ones.

-  A three-digit number and tens.

-  A three-digit number and hundreds.

  • Add and subtract numbers with up to three digits, using formal

written methods of column addition and subtraction.

  • Write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and

division using the multiplication tables that they know, including for

two-digit numbers times one-digit numbers, using mental and

              progressing onto formal written methods.

In addition to this we will be spending some time on ensuring that the children have rapid recall of their times tables facts. You can help your child by practising these daily at home. Some suggestions for learning times tables are: chanting them forwards and backwards in sequence, using flash cards of questions such as 2 x 2 = ?, setting multiplication and division problems to solve e.g. What is 24 divided by 6?  So ? x 6 = 24. Your help is much appreciated with this task as times tables are the key to understanding and succeeding in many areas of maths.

English

In our literacy studies we will be focusing on Fables, poems with structure and persuasive letters. We will be reading “Matilda” by Roald Dahl as our class novel.

In our unit on fables we will be writing our own version of some of Aesop’s well-loved tales. Watch out for some very persuasive letters to Santa this year after our unit on letter writing.

Science

The children will take part in a nature study lesson this half term where we will record what we can see happening in nature around the school grounds. Our topic is linked to science and we will be exploring healthy eating.

Topic

Our topic for this half term is “Healthy Humans”. We will have a ‘ready steady cook’ enrichment day in school where the children will have the task of creating their own healthy meals.

Children have been asked to complete a personal learning challenge based on the theme of our topic. A separate letter explaining this has been sent home. This half term’s challenges are due in by Friday 15th December 2017.
